There's a war on drugs, a war on cancer and a war on terrorism. Now a new battlefront is emerging in the public consciousness: a war on obesity.
Obesity is becoming such a serious health threat that it stands to surpass cancer and illicit drug use in its importance and magnitude, said Dr. Neil Hutcher, a bariatric surgeon at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital who has seen the ravaging effects of severe obesity for 30 years.
A small group of volunteers sought to alert the Richmond region to the problem yesterday with a multipronged educational event for parents and their children. Hutcher was joined by corporate partners in the health-care and fitness industries to support the first "walk against child obesity."
The event at Byrd Park's Fountain Lake in Richmond was sponsored by the Obesity Action Coalition, a nonprofit group that focuses on the prevention, research, education and treatment of obesity.
