State Backs Revived Youth Health-ed Program

Good nutrition and more physical activity are increasing in importance for public schools combating a growing obesity and diabetes epidemic among the young.

Alabama’s state school board nearly three years ago started a wellness program for students by mandating healthier lunchroom menus and by banning many soft drinks and junk food from vending machines.

Teachers and employees are in on the program, too, leading by example in school systems that have weight-loss programs and take other preventive health measures.
