The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) has created a strategic plan to engage more Americans in anti-obesity and fitness programs, the Associated Press reports. To position itself as a leading force against obesity and "the nation's ongoing lifestyle health crisis," the YMCA is expanding health-focused programs such as its Activate America initiative. To date, more than 370 YMCA locations have implemented Activate America, which will serve people who desire a healthier life, but lack facilities and opportunities to be physically active. Many YMCA participants benefit from financial assistance, and full membership fees usually are less than those at commercial health clubs. Many YMCAs are training staff, redesigning facilities and adjusting activities to better address community needs.
