Researchers Evaluate Video Games as Tool to Boost Families' Physical Activity Levels

Researchers at three universities and one medical center nationwide will use a four-year, $1.5 million federal grant to develop "exergames" that encourage children and their families to engage in shared physical activity, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Children, Youth and Families at Risk grant, which will be divided among New Mexico State University (NMSU), California State University-San Bernardino, Maine Medical Center and West Virginia University, will be used to determine the elements that attract children to active games. Researchers, for instance, will consider graphics quality, the use of relatable characters, music selections and type of physical activity.
