Seven North Carolina school districts across four counties have joined a pilot program to improve teachers' well-being and position them as role models for students working to adopt healthier lifestyle habits, the Asheville Citizen-Times reports. Under the Staff Together Achieving Results program, the teachers this August will undergo testing to measure their body mass index and nicotine, blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
State Board of Education Chairman Howard Lee notes that the program aims to prevent childhood obesity by increasing the number of positive role models, adding that, if successful, the pilot could expand statewide (Schrader, Asheville Citizen-Times, 4/22/08).
