Rutherford Elementary School students know each step they take is being monitored for their health.
Since Sept. 15, students wear a pedometer as part of the school's new walking program that looks to combat childhood obesity and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Throughout the school day, students use the simple device that counts the 15,840 steps, or 3 miles, they average walking. For at least three days a week, students hit the streets of Rutherford on a 1.3-mile route with their teachers.
On Friday, the Gibson County Coordinated School Health and its "No Child Left on Their Behind" program was recognized by the Governor's Office as a part of Child Health Week. The program was funded with a $2,000 mini grant from the state Office of Coordinated School Health used to purchase the pedometers.
