The St. Landry Parish School District has been awarded a $1.16 million grant to finance 12 LA4 prekindergarten programs in 10 elementary schools.
The bulk of the funding will be spent on teacher salaries and benefits, but a portion of the grant has been set aside to develop preschool playgrounds.
LA4 is an early childhood education program targeting 4-year-old children who are considered to be "at risk" and eligible to enter kindergarten the following year.
Learning through play is one component of the program.
