Manchin helped back the state's Healthy Lifestyles Initiative, which has among other things increased the nutrition and physical education requirements for school children and made sure they have periodic health screenings.

SIU Med School Leads New Coalition to Address Childhood Obesity

A new coalition to battle the problem of overweight and obese children in central Illinois has been awarded a $100,000 community engagement grant by Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL). The effort, led by faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, includes various partners working under the name Springfield Collaborative. The grant runs through October and is one of 14 that BCBSIL awarded in the state.

“Our goal is to work together with concerned people and organizations in the community to provide a consistent message of health, physical activity and nutrition across all important areas of our children’s lives,” explained Dr. David E. Steward, professor and chair of internal medicine. “We believe this formalized partnership, that will work to integrate services over time and locations, may be the first field application focused on children in pre-school and early elementary grades and one that we hope will be transferable across the state.”...(more)

Choosy Kids was recently featured on WBOY channel 12 news.

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the county and a local woman is doing something about it.
Smokey the Bear and his message about preventing forest fires is recognized by just about anyone, of any age.

Well now there is a new character, but instead of preventing forest fires this one is preventing childhood obesity and promoting healthy life choices.

He's not hard to pick out in this crowd of pre-schoolers, that's Choosy dancing in the back.

CHOOSY stands for "Choose Healthy Options Often and Start Young". He's a fury green singing and dancing role model for young children.

Head Start among programs in spotlight at obesity summit

BLOOMINGTON -- When CHOOSY talks, children at Heartland Head Start do more than listen. They stretch, march, twist, throw, catch, sing, dance and learn about healthier food choices.

"For them, it's fun," said Deb O'Connell, child health and development content leader at Head Start, 206 Stillwell St., Bloomington.

But when the character CHOOSY (Choose Healthy Options Often and Start Young) sings to the 3- to 5-year-olds in recordings that encourage movement and healthy eating, the children are doing physical activity while learning about the importance of movement and healthful eating.

"CHOOSY eats one cookie," JaMarcus Lackey, 4, said at Head Start following a recent activity.

"He eats vegetables," said Amarius Bellamy, 4.

"We spin and march. I do exercise like this," Lackey said as he did a pushup. "I do CHOOSY things at home: jump and play basketball."

CHOOSY is the centerpiece of "I Am Moving, I Am Learning," a program at Head Start to fight childhood obesity by increasing physical activity during daily routines and promoting healthy nutrition.

All 332 Head Start children at six centers in McLean and Livingston counties are involved in the program. The number of children exposed to the program -- or a similar one -- may increase in the coming months.

Historic meeting between leaders in child care and public health

Letting Others Know about the Healthy Kids, Healthy Future Blog.

On September 23-24, the Nemours Healthy Kids, Healthy Future conference will bring together child health and early education experts and government officials to examine the link between early childhood care and development of obesity later in life. The goal of the conference is to identify promising programs, practices and policies that promote healthy eating and physical activity in early childhood settings. This invitational conference is sponsored by Nemours, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to Prevent Childhood Obesity, with support from the Altarum Institute. There were so many requests to attend this conference that we regrettably could not accommodate everyone. Therefore we created a blog, healthykidshealthyfuture.com, to host live coverage with reporting, interviews, guest blogs and multimedia throughout the two-day conference. The site also offers event materials – agenda, speaker bios and the program compendium – and will host power points as they are presented. Even if you are unable to attend this conference in person, you can participate ‘virtually” via this healthykidshealthyfuture.com blog. We look forward to “hearing” from you at www.healthykidshealthyfuture.com!
